No Backache for Sydneysiders

posted: 19 May 2009

Sydney's keenest half marathoners enjoyed a rare treat at the end of The Sun-Herald Half Marathon this past weekend. At the conclusion of the challenging two-lap city centre course, weary athletes did not have to crouch down on cramping legs to remove their timing tag because, for the first time in Australasia, custom IPICO tags were being used.

They're off - 10,500 custom IPICO tags hit the streets of Sydney

The absence of a tag recovery area allowed race organisers to cope with ever increasing numbers for Australia's premier half marathon in the beautiful but confined Albert Park finish area. Athletes also enjoyed an attractive memento of their achievement.

Almost 10,500 runners registered to race in what is now comfortably Australasia's largest half marathon event. The two lap route of downtown Sydney takes in some of the city's most famous landmarks, including passing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and taking in an out-and-back section through the domain to Mrs Macquarie's Chair.

Timing Sports captured athletes times at the start and finish and also the 10km and 20km split points - the first time such detailed runner information has been captured for a half marathon in Australia. Athletes who logged on to the online results were provided with pacing information and 10km splits - a huge additional boon only available thanks to Timing Sports extensive investment in next generation IPICO dual frequency timing systems.
