Clear Road For the World's Biggest Run

posted: 12 August 2009

Pretenders to the throne have challenged as the running boom surged into 2009, but the Sun-Herald City2Surf in Sydney once again stands alone as the world's largest annual running event. With over 76,000 registered competitors, the 39th edition of this storied classic promised to be the best ever.

People ... Start Your Engines!

One of the most staggering sights in all of sport was restored to its full panoramic glory on Sunday as Timing Sports successfully timed the world's largest running event for the second year. For anyone who has ever witnessed the start of this iconic race, it is a breathtaking sight. On the dot of 9am, the massed start line of the front of the pack, break muster and charge across the intersection of Park and College St and begin the 14km course with a helter-skelter, heels-to-bum sprint down William Street.  Last year, Timing Sports electronically timed the event for the first time in its four-decade long history. That superb achievement was somewhat tempered by the need to place timing equipment and barricades in the centre of the start line, due to width limitations imposed by the timing technology being used.

Not so for 2009. Timing Sports' unrolled their magnificent new IPICO 5m wide mats and Elite readers. When these timing beasts were hooked up together, an uninterrupted 19.5m wide start line was ready to handle more than 65,000 official starters. The addition of the trademark blue lines of mats even added to the spectacle as the City2Surf start line was restored to its full glory.

Timing Sports innovation did not stop there. In addition to the new equipment deployed in the event, the 2009 City2Surf became the largest event ever timed with custom IPICO tags. Weary runners crossing the finish line in Bondi were spared the pain of bending down to remove their timing transponder and queueing through transponder collection gates. Instead, far more space was available in front of the Bondi Pavilion for runners to collect their finisher's medal and recover in relative comfort. The congestion of the chip recovery area from 2008 was a distant memory.

Even with over half a million tag times in the bag, Timing Sports still had plenty of work to do. Within an hour of the final finisher, hundreds of race day changes had been processed and the final results had been released to event owner, Fairfax, for publication in the Tuesday edition of the Sun-Herald. Thanks to Timing Sports, there was no need to "hold the presses".

Work then began preparing Internet servers for the deluge of traffic to the official results, released on the Wednesday after the event. These results were presented in a new, fast, fun and interactive way thanks to a partnership between City2Surf and eventdirector, the acclaimed athlete management solution supplied by Timing Sports' parent company, Keep Left.

"The City2Surf is a benchmark event in electronic timing," said Timing Sports' Rob Docherty. "These are the days you measure yourself against because you absolutely must deliver, there are no second chances. Between ourselves and our partners at Times7  Sport and The Timing Guys, we delivered. This was a great day for our company."

"Fairfax has built a strong relationship with Keep Left (parent company of Timing Sports) over the last few years," commented Lisa Dowsett of Fairfax Events. "It was cemented this year with the addition of their new IPICO timing solutions, custom tags and eventdirector athlete management and results system. When you manage the largest running event in the world, you need partners you can trust implicitly and who deliver. For the second year running, Keep Left ticked all the boxes and we look forward to working with them again for our 40th anniversary event in 2010."
