Record Winter Tour Ends

posted: 24 September 2009

Timing Sports’ six month long tour of the biggest and brightest running events in Australia came to an end this past weekend at the Sydney Running Festival, the traditional curtain closer for the winter fun run season.

Sydney once again turned on a spectacular day of sunshine and warm temperatures with record numbers across all events. For the first time in its history, the “house full” sign was erected on three of the four events during race week as the limited bridge closure window just couldn’t accommodate any more. Those lucky enough to compete, however, enjoyed what must be one of the most stunning race finishes anywhere in the world, completing their 4k, 9k, half marathon or full marathon journey at the foot of the Sydney Opera House with the famous “coat hanger” bridge for a backdrop.

Despite recessions, natural disasters and a reportedly aging and obese population, Aussies once again reaffirmed their love of sports and the outdoors by supporting marquee events in record numbers. Every one of the major events we service enjoyed record numbers in 2009.

Here’s a quick recap of Timing Sports’ stable of “big six” events:

  • April in Melbourne: Run For The Kids
Despite being just a few years old, RFK bolstered entry numbers to reach the 30,000 person entrant limit a few weeks before the race.

  • July on the Gold Coast: Gold Coast Airport Marathon
By far the most challenging event on our books, Timing Sports delivered live internet timing from 14 on course locations as over 4,000 entrants made it Australasia’s biggest marathon.

  • August in Sydney: The City2Surf
The grand daddy of them all! More than 76,000 people registered to run the iconic 14km route from Hyde Park to Bondi. Timing Sports’ collected over half a million chip times to deliver final results within an hour of the final finisher.

  • August Whopper Weekend: Perth City To Surf and Bridge to Brisbane
Massively increasing numbers swelled these two events to over 80,000 combined entrants and a massive logistical challenge for Timing Sports to cater for two huge events on the same day.

  • September in Sydney: Sydney Running Festival
When we first timed this event in 2006, there were 17,000 entrants. Three short years later, there were over 32,000. Anyone who has seen the runners stream over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finish in front of the magnificent Opera House will understand why.

So there it is, six races and 246,000 athletes.
And the best part of all? We get to do it all again next year!
